The Phi Beta Cottage at The MacDowell Colony

The Phi Beta Studio for Creative Artists is located at The MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Completed in 1931, the cottage has housed more than 50 composers, playwrights, poets, and writers during their stay at this famous art colony. The Fraternity maintains the studio, but its use is directed by the Admissions Committee of the Edward MacDowell Association without Phi Beta intervention. The Phi Beta Cottage received renovations in 2010. Phi Beta further aids Colony objectives through contributions for the MacDowell Fellowships.

MacDowell Colony was founded by Edward MacDowell in 1907. The sole criterion for acceptance is talent, as determined by a panel of judges representing the discipline of the applicant. Applications may be requested from:

    Additional National Service Projects

    In addition to its continued support of The MacDowell Colony, Phi Beta chapters contribute to their local communities in a number of ways. Phi Beta has also completed several projects on the national level. Some of these include:

  • Building a practice studio at Interlochen Music Camp (1934)
  • Participating in USO shows (1951-1964)
  • Donating a music library to the Philippine Islands (1960)
  • Music projects in aid to Mexico (1962)
  • Hand-enlarging music for the visually impaired with the Library of Congress (1971)
